Upward Bound Programs:

The Upward Bound programs at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith work with eligible ninth through twelfth grade students to prepare them for success in high school and college.

UPWARD BOUND CLASSIC:

Upward Bound Classic provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound projects provide academic instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages. Tutoring, counseling, mentoring, cultural enrichment, and work-study programs also are supported.

UPWARD BOUND MATH/SCIENCE:

The Upward Bound Math/Science program introduces students to opportunities in math and science and encourages them to pursue post-secondary degrees in these fields. Program services include: math and science training; academic counseling and advisement; exposure to math and science professionals; technology training; and participant-conducted scientific research under the guidance of faculty members or graduate students, who are serving as mentors.

BOTH UPWARD BOUND PROGRAMS PROVIDE:

• A six-week academic summer program
• Instruction in reading, writing, study skills, and other subjects necessary for success in education beyond high school
• Academic, financial, and personal counseling
• Exposure to academic programs and cultural events
• Tutorial services
• Mentoring programs
• Information on postsecondary education opportunities
• Assistance in completing college entrance and financial aid applications
• Assistance in preparing for college entrance exams
• Work study positions to expose participants to careers requiring a postsecondary degree
