The Fall Chamber Ensembles Concert at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith will be held at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 1 in Breedlove Auditorium.
The free concert will feature the UA Fort Smith Brass Ensemble, directed by Dr. Ryan Gardner of Fort Smith; the UA Fort Smith Woodwind Ensemble, directed by Dr. David Carter of Fort Smith; the UA Fort Smith Percussion Ensemble, directed by Lynn Francis of Elkins; and the UA Fort Smith Jazz Lab Ensemble, directed by Don Bailey of Fort Smith.
Some of the selections for the concert include “March” from Prokofiev’s “The Love of Three Oranges,” “Christ is Born Today” by Palestrina; Elliott Carter’s “Canonic Suite” for saxophone quartet; Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Trio op. 87” performed by a clarinet trio; “Gainsborough” by Thomas Gauger, “Ripeness” by Philip Long, “Freddie Freeloader” by Miles Davis and “Sittin’ on Top of the World,” as recorded by Ray Charles.
Dr. Gardner applauded the joint effort from the various ensemble groups.
“This concert combines forces of brass, woodwind and percussion,” said Dr. Gardner. “It’s a true testament to the strength of our student instrumentalists.”
Dr. Carter said the Woodwind Ensemble would perform as standard-instrumentation groups, with a saxophone quartet, clarinet trio and a soprano/flute duo.
“I would encourage everyone to not miss this opportunity to hear one of the gems of the saxophone quartet repertoire, Elliott Carter’s ‘Canonic Suite,’” said Carter, adding that the clarinet trio and soprano/flute duo will perform works that highlight the intimate qualities of romantic chamber music.
Francis said the concert would have mass appeal.
“We will be featuring a wide array of music and musical instruments,” she said. “There will be something for everyone.”
Bailey agreed, saying the concert would be filled with a variety of chamber groups and musical styles.
“This will be the first time for the Jazz Lab Ensemble to perform in concert with the other instrumental chamber groups,” said Bailey. “I believe they will add a nice touch to the concert.”
