CBPD Offers December Workshop and Classes

The Center for Business and Professional Development at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith has scheduled a time management workshop as well as classes in information technology and business writing for December.
Time Management Workshop
Dec. 2: Time Management
A time management workshop on Dec. 2 will address typical time management styles and give techniques for breaking out of old, non-productive patterns. Topics include understanding what can be controlled and what can’t, assessing time management strengths and weaknesses, mastering the art of delegation, and managing interruptions, distractions, paper, e-mails and data files. The non-credit workshop will be held from 8-11:30 a.m. in room 114 of the Flanders Business Center, North 50th St. and Grand Ave. Fee is $59.
Information Technology Class
Dec. 4 & 11: Beginning Microsoft Excel
Beginning Microsoft Excel, which meets Dec. 4 and 11, will cover basic Excel entry and editing techniques, simple formulas, the five basic functions (SUM, COUNT, AVERAGE, MIN and MAX), the Insert Function command, formatting, page set-up, and printing and charting. Classes will meet from 8 a.m. until noon in room 115 of the Business and Industrial Institute, N. 50th St. and Grand Ave. Fee is $129 and includes a student manual.
Business Writing Classes
Dec. 1: To Whom It May Concern: E-mails and Letters That Get Results
“To Whom It May Concern: E-mails and Letters That Get Results” on Dec. 1 will teach the secrets to short, effective and meaningful emails, memos and letters, with the class designed to expose writing weaknesses that can hold a person back on the job. Class meets from 8 a.m. until noon in room 114 of the Flanders Building, N. 50th St. and Grand Ave. Fee is $59 and includes a student manual.
Dec. 8: Step by Step: Work Instructions Anyone Can Follow
Since work instructions may be the most important documents a person ever writes, “Step by Step: Work Instructions Anyone Can Follow” on Dec. 8 will teach participants how to break down complex jobs and turn them into simple component tasks so that anyone can follow them. Class meets from 8 a.m. until noon in room 114 of the Flanders Building, N. 50th St. and Grand Ave. Fee is $59 and includes a student manual.
Conducting the time management workshop is Kim Gordon of Fort Smith, senior business consultant and management instructor with the CBPD since December 2006. As a consultant, she meets with community leaders to help them craft and execute training and development programs. Before joining UA Fort Smith, she spent more than 20 years in corporate America, holding leadership roles in human resources as well as in sales. She has a bachelor’s degree in organizational management and a master’s degree in leadership and ethics from John Brown University.
Micki Voelkel of Van Buren teaches the information technology and business writing classes. Voelkel, an assistant professor in the CBPD, has extensive experience in the areas of communication, personal effectiveness and computer applications. She is a Microsoft Certified Application Specialist instructor with a bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and a master’s degree from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.
