Nov. 19 Talk on Prehistoric Fishing

Nov. 19 Talk on Prehistoric Fishing (Posted: November 2, 2009)     (Printable Version)

“Prehistoric Fishing on the Ouachita River” is the title for a talk Nov. 19 at the University of Arkansas - Fort Smith.

Dr. Mary Beth Trubitt, station archeologist for the Arkansas Archeological Survey’s research station at Henderson State University, will speak at 7 p.m. in the Echols Conference Center. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Trubitt will talk about prehistoric fishing using evidence of fishing from the Arkansas Archeological Society Training Program digs at the Jones Mill site near Malvern. Netsinkers found during the training program will be described, as well as their function as weights for fishing nets. Some preliminary ideas will be offered about the use of fire-cracked rock features for cooking and preserving fish near the banks of the Ouachita River.

Dr. Trubitt conducts archeological research and fieldwork in Southwest Arkansas and teaches anthropology courses at Henderson. During recent projects, she has investigated novaculite quarrying, tool production and exchange by Indians living along the Ouachita River. She has also conducted research on mound building by Caddo Indians in Southwest Arkansas.

Dr. Trubitt earned her doctorate in anthropology from Northwestern University in Illinois and has held teaching positions at Northwestern and at Western Michigan University before moving to Arkansas in 2000. She makes her home in Bismarck with her husband and two daughters.

The talk by Dr. Trubitt, which is for a meeting of the Ark-Homa Chapter of the Arkansas Archeological Society and the Oklahoma Anthropological Society, is hosted by the Arkansas Archeological Survey research station located at UA Fort Smith.

For more information, contact Tim Mulvihill, research station archeologist at UA Fort Smith, by telephone at 479-788-7812 or by email at tmulvihi@uafortsmith.edu.
