WWII

[IMAGE: Modern view of Fort Chaffee barracks] In the Spring of 2001, honors history students collected oral history interviews related to the start-up and Fifth Armored Division eras of Camp Chaffee.

The interviews included memoirs from civilian workers at the time of the building of the camp in 1942 and from basic trainees at Camp Chaffee in the 1950's when Elvis Presley was inducted into the army there. Other celebrities such as Jackie Brandt, a professional baseball player of note, and Arnold Short, an Olympic quality basketball player were interviewed or scheduled to be interviewed.

Some of those interviews are available to you now on this site.
