Advising FAQs

Who is my advisor?

When you visit Student Advisement, you may meet with any one of the academic advisors. Academic advisors are available to see walk-in students or schedule appointments during regular office hours.

Why should I be advised?

Incoming students are often unfamiliar with the concept of "academic advisor." In general your advisor is there to help you make responsible, informed and timely decisions about your educational plans and life goals.

An advisor will:

  • Help you learn about degree requirements and college policies and procedures.
  • Assist you in selecting courses which will satisfy degree requirements, fit your strengths and contribute to your career and life goals.
  • Be available throughout the semester to help you solve academic problems when possible and obtain the assistance of others when necessary.

We encourage you to visit with an advisor whenever you have questions or concerns. Your advisor expects and wants to hear from you.

When should I meet with my advisor?

Any time you like! We advise year round. You are encouraged to meet with an advisor early in the semester to:

  • Discuss any problems which affect your academic performance.
  • Complete a long term course plan for upcoming semesters.
  • Add or drop courses.
  • Discuss academic progress.
  • Declare a major.

When should I choose a major?

When you are READY. Explore your options using the resources available to you. An advisor can help you with self-assessment and with the other resources in the Career Resource Center. Generally, the decision needs to be made in the fall or spring of the sophomore year to allow entry into the junior and senior level courses.

How do I declare my major?

When you have researched your major and feel ready to declare, you will sign a degree plan with an advisor. Declaration of a major can be done during the registration period and through the first week of the semester.

How do I know what classes to take?

Print a copy of your degree plan online. The plan is a guideline of courses a student should follow, depending on his or her educational goals at the time of enrollment. The more a student has defined these goals, the more assurance he or she has of taking courses which will apply toward the chosen degree.

Where do I go to drop a class?

Please log on to LionsLink to drop your classes up until midnight the night before the term begins. All changes done online become complete immediately. After this point, and if the class has not started, go to Student Advisement; pick up the change of schedule form; fill it out with your advisor and process it through the Records Office. After the official reporting day, the form needs to be taken to the instructor for a signature, signed by your advisor, and then processed through the Records Office. All students on Financial Aid should check with that office before dropping any classes. The change of schedule form must be processed through the Records Office before your change is complete.

How long will it take me to complete my degree?

This depends on the degree you are seeking, your course placement, and how many classes you are able to take each term. An associate's degree will take approximately two years; a bachelor's degree will take approximately four years; and a master's degree will take approximately two additional years. (This does not include developmental courses.)

How do I pay for my classes?

All tuition and fees must be paid by the payment deadline. You must pay tuition and fees in full or make arrangements for payment with the Cashier or the Financial Aid Office. This applies to all students, including recipients of scholarships, veterans' benefits, and other types of aid.

Tuition and fee charges do not include the costs of textbooks and supplies.
