FOR THE VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS
A NEW STANDARD OF EXCELLENCE
2008-2009

The University of Arkansas - Fort Smith Academy of the Arts is the premier center for the visual and performing arts. A division of Lifelong Learning, the Academy offers private and class instruction in music and theatre to children and adults of all ages and skill levels. In addition, our summer camp offers activities in music, theatre, dance, and art.

The mission of the Academy is to stand at the forefront as the leader in the visual and performing arts. We seek to develop life skills in each student such as creativity, social skills, and self-confidence. As we design innovative programs and serve as a mentor to students, our standard of excellence will be recognized across the state and region.

Students in our program enjoy the privilege of using the excellent teaching, performing, and learning facilities that UA Fort Smith has to offer. Each semester, students also have wonderful opportunities to perform. Included are plays, musicals, solo recitals, master class performances with guest artists, and concerts with UA Fort Smith and community music ensembles. Through our programs we are currently reaching nearly 500 children yearly for the arts.

Our distinguished faculty of artists are outstanding in their field. They have trained in some of the finest conservatories in the world and perform as soloists, in chamber ensembles, in Broadway productions, and in opera.

Two performance series have evolved from the development of the Academy. Through our partnership with the Young Actors Guild, we are able to present the ShowTime Series. This is a yearly series that offers both large and small theatre productions presented by students who are participating in our Academy theatre program. Students have the privilege of working with theatre directors of national reputation through these productions.

The Academy of the Arts in connection with the UA Fort Smith Music Department is also pleased to present the Distinguished Artists Series, a four-concert set of classical masterpieces presented by artists of national distinction. This series not only promotes the classical performing arts, but also allows our Academy students a wonderful and rare opportunity to work under these talented artists during their stay.
